Multi-Layer Extrusion
Ansamed can produce tubing with up to three separate layers of different materials. Chemically dissimilar materials can be extruded together using an intermediate tie layer. Numerous configurations can be produced.
This technology can generate tubing with enhanced performance characteristics. For example two layer balloon tubing can be produced with superior mechanical properties to single layer tubing produced at the exact same dimensions. Tubing can be produced with a lubricious inner layer and outerlayers which lend themselves well to chemical bonding or laser weldng. This type of multilayer technology is commonly used in PTCA catheters, producing tubing with a lubricous PE inner layer and Pebax/Nylon outerlayer with good processing characteristics.
Ansamed can produce to the tightest tolerances in the industry for tubing of this nature. For example, tolerances of +/- 0.007mm can be held on trilayer tubing with ODs of 0.5mm and IDs of 0.32mm
All trilayers are produced on 6 sigma processes with excellent outer diameter process capability (Cpk > 1.5).
